§ Introduction
A LPW Photographic Immersion begins before the first photograph is made. It begins with the photographer and with the place. It begins with curiosity. It begins with the willingness to slow down, to observe without rushing, and to approach the world with openness rather than expectation. This belief is at the heart of every workshop we create.
Before arrival we look at previous work, experience, interests and intentions; at the same time we study the territory, its history, visual culture and the images through which it has already been represented.
We prepare not to decide in advance what must be photographed, but to arrive capable of seeing more.
Then preparation meets reality. The light changes. People resist expectation. A photograph imagined before arrival becomes impossible and another becomes necessary. This is where the Immersion truly begins: in the continuous movement between knowledge, observation, encounter, apparatus, image, critique and return.
Every LPW Immersion is built specifically around its territory and its photographic question. We do not take one workshop and move it around the world. The location is never incidental. Neither is the photographer. Groups are deliberately limited to six photographers. This allows us to know each participant, follow the development of the work and respond to what is actually happening rather than deliver the same programme to everyone.
Around that small group LPW builds the conditions of a professional photographic production: research, locations, photographic sessions, professional camera, lighting and light-control systems, and — when the work requires them — models, assistants and the production structure necessary to make ambitious images possible.
The purpose is not to provide a collection of photographic opportunities. It is to create the conditions in which a photographer can understand more clearly what they are looking at, how they are looking at it, what their decisions are doing to the image and why they make the photographs they make.
A Photographic Immersion is not a photography course placed inside a journey. It is a way of learning to see through photography.
Because photography is not about capturing the world.
It is about learning how to see it.
