In the Maldives, the eye can travel a long way before finding somewhere to rest. A line of sea, a pale stretch of sky, light returning from the water. Then a face enters the picture and all that distance becomes intimate. This is where I would like our three days at Soneva Jani to begin.
We will be six photographers working with three models, in small groups and with time for individual ideas. The lagoon offers an expansive setting, but I am equally interested in what happens close to the camera: a glance held for a moment, the shape of a hand, the way a figure meets the edge of the frame.
Working beside water means accepting a changing image. Reflections shift, the background moves, and a small alteration in position changes the light on skin. We can return to the same composition and find it transformed. There is pleasure in that attention, especially when the model is involved in the search and her own suggestions become part of the photograph.
Meet the Model is a gathering for making pictures together, with space for friendship, concentration and unhurried experiments. It is neither a course nor a workshop. There are no scheduled lessons and no single way of seeing that everyone must follow.
I will be there throughout. If a reflection is difficult to manage, a lighting choice needs discussing or you want to understand a particular technique or piece of equipment, I will gladly help. These conversations and short practical explanations are offered entirely free of charge, as part of sharing the work.
Our production is centred on the spaces reserved for the group at Soneva Jani. Where those reserved spaces include accommodation, staying with us is offered without a supplement: the reservation is already a cost of our photographic production. Taking up the lodging is optional, and the participation fee remains the same if you prefer to make your own arrangements.
The days will also leave room for the pleasures of the table. Sitting together, enjoying the local culinary experience and talking about something other than the last exposure are part of what makes a small group work well. Meals are included in the participation fee; drinks are at each participant’s own expense.
§ WHERE - WHEN
Noonu Atoll, Maldives
Soneva Jani is set around a lagoon in the Maldives’ Noonu Atoll, with villas on the island and over the water. Wooden walkways, sheltered domestic spaces and open views give us several ways to relate the human figure to the sea.
The colour of the water will be a presence in our photographs, but it need not fill every frame. We can use the horizon as a quiet line, let reflected light enter a portrait or find a closer composition in which only a suggestion of blue remains.
I would like the place to become familiar enough that we can stop photographing its first impression. Over three days, we can notice smaller things: the light beneath a shelter, a repeated gesture, the moment when a model seems entirely at ease. Those are often the photographs that continue to matter after the journey home.
§ Models
Models
Ava, Yasmin and Sofia bring these days to life — accomplished professionals in their own right. Many come from the world of fashion and glamour, yet each has built real experience working on set with photographers of every kind, from seasoned professionals to committed amateurs. We know them well: every one of them has already worked with us before, more than once — a familiarity that lets the work move with ease from the very first frame.
Ava
At ease in water and in the long light of the lagoon.
Yasmin
A striking face for intimate portraits against an endless horizon.
Sofia
Relaxed and luminous, a natural among reflections and sea light.
§ Photo Gear Provided
Photo Gear Provided
Over many years of working as a photographer, and of running both a photographic studio and an equipment-hire service, I came to understand what photographers truly hope to find when they arrive on a set. Not simply more equipment, but the freedom to make an image without being stopped by the absence of the right tool.
This is what London Photographic Workshop places at your disposal: a rare, complete photographic production, brought together in one place and made available to you for the duration of the event. It is the kind of equipment most photographers encounter only in fragments, over many years, and which would cost a considerable sum to hire for a three-day production.
You will be able to work with HASSELBLAD X2D II cameras and a selection of HASSELBLAD lenses; SUNBOUNCE natural-light systems, including reflectors, screens, Sun-Swatter and Sun-Cage; PROFOTO, BRONCOLOR and BOWENS studio flash; professional battery-powered PROFOTO flash, with a complete selection of modifiers; LEE Filters and professional matte boxes; MANFROTTO photographic tripods; and MATTHEWS grip equipment.
This is not equipment assembled for display. It is a working set of serious tools: the cameras, light, modifiers and support systems that allow an idea to become a photograph when the moment arrives.
§ Ethics and closed-set policy
Ethics and closed-set policy
Respect is part of the photographic language, not an administrative footnote. All models and participants must be eighteen or older. The models determine their individual nudity and posing boundaries. Consent is specific, ongoing and may be withdrawn at any time. No participant may touch a model without explicit permission. No phones, spectators or behind-the-scenes recording on closed sets.
Images may not be published, exhibited, sold or submitted to competitions outside the agreed model-release terms. No generative-AI training or synthetic alteration of a model’s body or identity. A private changing and resting area must always be available. Models receive proper breaks, meals, accommodation and transport support.
Alcohol is served only after photography has finished for the day. Before each session, the artistic director holds a short consent check-in covering wardrobe, nudity level, location, participating photographers and intended images.
